alternator plug mystery connect it or leave it?

I noticed a two-wire Mercruiser alternator plug just hanging loose while I was getting my 2007 Four Winns 274 Funship ready for the season. One of the wires is purplish, but the other one looks like it was cut at the factory. I haven't had any issues in the past, and it takes a tool to unclip, so I'm thinking it was probably never connected in the first place. My instinct tells me to just connect it and see what happens, but I'm curious if there's a reason it's meant to stay unplugged. Does anyone have any insights on this specific setup with a Mercruiser alternator, especially regarding that purplish wire?

that's deffinitely odd, that purple wire is usually an excitation/sense wire for the alternator to start charging.
If it's charging now without it, your alternator might be self exciting.
The cut wire is the real mystery. I agree with @Isellseashells you need to check a wiring diagram for your engine before plugging it in, you don't want to mess with voltage regulation
A multimeter check on that purple wire for 12V with the key on could also offer clues
